Abstract
In this chapter we discuss some of the basic concepts you need to understand in preparing your own medical information management system. We evaluate the various ways to organize your databases, with emphasis on the implications in selecting different types of database management system package. We also tell you how best to plan and operate your system so that it can adjust to the inevitable changes in the future.
