There are two important classes of topological spaces which satisfy countability conditions (the class of separable spaces, to be discussed later, may be regarded as a third). These are known as the first and second countability conditions, for historical reasons. However, in most accounts of the subject, including the present one, it is the second countability condition which comes first.
