Reliable statistical information on the incidence of therapeutic abortion in American hospitals is difficult to obtain because the data are scattered over thousands of hospitals with their individual records and record-keeping systems. To date, most states have no effective centralized agency for the compilation of this information, and none exists on the federal level.
