Influence of Hormones

  • Gilbert B. Forbes

Hormones are the facilitators and the regulators of metabolic processes. Through their action on target organs, where they combine with specific receptors, they stimulate the formation of cyclic AMP or messenger RNA so as to affect cell function. Included are the regulation of body fluid volume and electrolyte metabolism; of gastrointestinal absorption and renal excretion; and of carbohydrate, protein, and fat metabolism. They are concerned with tissue growth and differentiation, and with the resting metabolic rate of individual tissues and of the body as a whole. A deficiency or an excess of certain hormones can affect body composition.
