Abstract

A functional deficiency of the trace amines β-phenylethylamine (PE) and tryptamine (T) in depressive disorders has been suggested by a number of researchers (Dewhurst, 1968; Boulton and Milward, 1971; Fischer et al., 1972; Sabelli and Mosnaim, 1974), and one of the most pronounced effects seen in the brains of laboratory animals after administration of most monoamine oxidase (MAO)-inhibiting antidepressants is a marked increase in concentrations of PE and T (Boulton, 1976; Philips and Boulton, 1979; McKim et al., 1980). It has also been demonstrated that administration of either of these amines to rodents produces marked behavioural effects (Dewhurst, 1968; Dourish, 1982, 1984; Greenshaw, 1984).
