Current Studies Examining Regulation of the Human B Cell Cycle

  • Chapter

Part of the book series: Experimental Biology and Medicine ((EBAM,volume 18))

Abstract

The study of human B cell physiology involves the evaluation of a wide array of functions performed by B lymphocytes including antigen presentation (1), maintenance of memory for antigen (2), lymphokine secretion (3–5), and Ig production. Clearly B cells influence the functioning of other cells as much as they are regulated by cell contact with and cytokines produced by various cell types. In this review we will focus on work done recently in our laboratory examining the role of certain mediators and their receptors in regulating the progression of human B lymphocytes from the resting state to Ig producing plasma cells. This can roughly be divided into stages of activation, proliferation and differentiation (6–7).
