Abstract

To start the present discussion of differentiation, we recall the results of Exercise 6 at the end of Chapter 1, namely that the addition and subtraction of
$$ z = x + iy,\;\;\bar z = x - iy $$
yields
$$ x = \frac{{z + \bar z}}{2},\;\;y = \frac{{z - \bar z}}{{2i.}} $$
