Abstract

Large computer-assisted systems generally have shortcomings of one or more kinds: their functionality may differ from their specification, performance can be less than desirable, system flexibility is often unacceptably low, fault tolerance is all but absent, etc. Particularly worrying is the almost total lack of confidence in a system’s correctness.
