Abstract

An intelligent knowledge-based system (IKBS) consists of a knowledge base and an inference mechanism (plus an optional, possibly temporary, working database and a user interface). An IKBS may or may not be the same thing as an expert system. The IKBS has existed for some time but applications in geophysics are slow to appear. Seismic interpretation, which is almost entirely knowledge based, should yield readily to the IKBS approach, especially now that multitasking, dedicated interpretational workstations are becoming commonplace. An illustration is given using some sequence stratigraphy definitions and rules written in PROLOG for accessing the definitions.
