Abstract
Classification of thoracic aortic aneurysms includes criteria of location, etiology and pathogenesis, pathologic anatomy, and the time course of development of symptoms or signs. The simplest anatomic classification divides aneurysms into true (all layers of the aortic wall are represented in the aneurysm wall) and false (deficiency of one or more of the normal layers of the aorta). Aneurysms having symptoms or signs for less than 2 weeks usually are referred to as acute.
