Abstract
Enzymes are biological catalysts, produced by living tissues, that increase the rates of reactions. They do not affect the nature of an equilibrium; they merely speed up the rate at which it is achieved. By enzymically increasing the rates of certain reactions, organisms can select the reactions required for their life from a large collection of undesirable but competing, spontaneous reactions.
