Anticipated Effects of Elevated CO2 and Climate Change on Plants from Mediterranean-Type Ecosystems Utilizing Results of Studies in Other Ecosystems

  • Chapter
Global Change and Mediterranean-Type Ecosystems

Part of the book series: Ecological Studies ((ECOLSTUD,volume 117))

Abstract

The purpose of this paper is to review our knowledge of plant responses to atmospheric carbon dioxide partial pressure. This review follows earlier reviews on the direct effects of atmospheric CO2 on plants (Strain 1985,1987) in which it was pointed out that plants ecosystems respond in a hierarchical fashion. Increasing CO2 causes primary physiological responses which generate secondary metabolic responses which lead to tertiary responses of growth development. Changes in plant biomass structure induce changes in plant-animal and plant-microbial interactions eventually changes will appear at the ecosystem level (Table 6-1).
