The free energy and the entropy are the relevant thermodynamical potentials at constant temperature and at constant energy, respectively. Expressions are here derived for these potentials in solid-liquid systems, including interface contributions.
It is then shown that relative minimizers of the free energy (as well as relative maximizers of the entropy) fulfill the Gibbs-Thomson law at phase interfaces, and the associated contact angle condition on the boundary.
Finally, the so-called phase field model is outlined.
