Abstract

Radiation is a ubiquitous component of the environment. We are exposed to ultraviolet radiation from the sun; gamma rays from cosmic radiation; the decay of isotopes in building materials, air, water, and food; alpha particles from radon and radon-daughters that seep into our basements; and X-rays, gamma rays, and other radiation from man-made sources (such as those used in medical procedures or produced as a byproduct of nuclear power generation). All these radiations represent biological hazards and are associated with tumor induction. However, the mechanism of action of ultraviolet radiation (a nonionizing radiation) is different from those of X-rays, gamma rays, and other (particulate types of) ionizing radiations. This chapter focuses on radiation injury by ionizing radiations that leads to the emergence of tumors, and on the modulating effects of various biological factors and physical and chemical agents on this carcinogenic process.
