Human Cytogenetic Cancer Markers

Part of the book series: Contemporary Biomedicine ((CB,volume 13))

Abstract

Our perception of chromosomes has changed dramatically over the past few years. High resolution cytogenetic analyses, coupled with chromosomal in situ hybridization, have helped to unravel the mysteries of prokaryotic and eukaryotic chromosome structure. Molecular cytogenetic technology has proved to be a valuable resource to decipher the genetic composition of chromosomal regions involved in disease manifestation. In situ hybridization of DNA probes to chromosomes has resulted in mapping many genes and anonymous DNA sequences directly to definitive chromosomal regions. Information is also now available regarding the position and relationship of genes along the chromosome’s length. The advent of computerized digital analysis systems has made it possible to map multiple genes or DNA sequences simultaneously.
