Abstract

Disease: Marburg hemorrhagic fever, Ebola hemorrhagic fever.

Etiologic Agents: Marburg virus, Ebola-Sudan virus, Ebola-Zaire virus.

Source: Unknown.

Clinical Manifestations: Acute onset with headache, myalgia, and lethargy. Leads to gastrointestinal symptoms and rash. Serious cases involve severe hemorrhagic manifestations. Death follows blood loss and shock. Mortality can be near 90% in an outbreak.

Pathology: Virus is present in most organs, and lesions are found in many organs. Vascular collapse leading to shock may be due to endothelial damage.

Laboratory Diagnosis: Diagnosis is made by virus isolation from blood and other tissues or by a fourfold rise in indirect fluorescence antibody titer. Caution must be used when handling specimens as viruses are extremely virulent.

Epidemiology: Viruses are indigenous to Africa.

Treatment: None proven.

Prevention and Control: No vaccine is available. Control is by good barrier nursing techniques and proper use of syringes and needles.
