Abstract

The GSS provides information on several forms of social participation, among them organizational memberships and evening social activity. Seventy percent of each age group, excepting the youngest and oldest, hold at least one membership. The highest rates of organizational participation are between age 35 and 54, when over 50 percent of the respondents report at least two memberships. In most age clusters higher percentages of men than women report holding at least one membership. The proportions of individuals who hold memberships have increased over the term of the survey.
