Abstract

Socioeconomic variables in the GSS include occupation, education, income, social class self-definition, and housing. The occupational classifications follow the U.S. occupational title system. (Davis and Smith, 1986, p. 25) For the present volume the GSS occupational categories were combined into two major groups - white collar and blue collar - with the white collar further defined as ”professional,” ”administrative,” and ”other.” For further information on the groupings see Appendix B.
