Abstract

The MIDAS system provides a full image processing environment with a simple but powerful control language and an extensive set of astronomical application programs including packages for reduction of spectral data and direct imaging. Special packages are available for doing object identification and classification in addition to crowded field photometry. A table file system provides the basic capabilities of a simple relational model and supports the manipulation of heterogeneous data structures. MIDAS is an open system which provides easy implementation of user programs written in FORTRAN with a comprehensive set of interface routines. Interfaces to graphic and image displays are device independent by using the Astronet Graphic Library and the Image Display Interfaces, respectively.

The present version of MIDAS has been developed in the VAX/VMS environment. A portable version is under development with an expected release in the spring of 1988. The portable version will be available for both VAX/VMS and UNIX systems and will include significant enhancements in the area of control language, table file system and networking. This version will support application programs in both FORTRAN and C languages.
