Spatial Heterogeneity and Habitat Interactions in Lake Communities

  • Chapter
Complex Interactions in Lake Communities

Abstract

Much of our understanding of complex interactions and community structure in lakes has come from studies of planktonic communities. One has only to look at the ideas and examples described in this volume to see how successful these studies have been, both at elucidating the workings of planktonic communities and at contributing concepts to the broader field of ecology. In our opinion, this success can be attributed to the relative ease of sampling and manipulating planktonic communities, the relative simplicity of these communities, and to the long tradition of talented ecologists who have worked on this community.
