DNA Flexibility Under Control: The Jumna Algorithm and its Application to BZ Junctions

  • Chapter
Unusual DNA Structures

Abstract

When our laboratory received a high-resolution color graphics terminal about two years ago I spent several happy months in front of the screen admiring the beautiful images of nucleic acid structure that we were able to create. These images had several clear advantages over molecular models: they could be created quickly, they didn’t need supports to keep them in place, they were accurate, they could be colored to reveal many interesting properties and nobody tried to steal them in order to build something else. However it soon became clear that one thing that was lacking in these images, namely that one cannot get hold of them and pull them into new conformations. This is a property of molecular models that is very useful and often exploited, especially in dealing with the subject matter of this meeting — “Unusual DNA Structures”.
