The data used in this research project consist of information on two cohorts of releasees from the North Carolina prison system. The first cohort consists of all individuals released from North Carolina prisons from July 1, 1977 through June 30, 1978. There were 9,457 such individuals. The second cohort consists of the 9,679 individuals released from North Carolina prisons from July 1, 1979 through June 30, 1980.1 Note that these data sets are far larger, more representative, and more timely than is usual in criminal justice research.
