Abstract
The concept of neural regulation of the pituitary gland was developed four decades ago (23). Since then a great deal has been learned about the function and structural organization of the complex and highly integrated system controlling the secretion of trophic hormones from the pituitary. The basal secretion of the pituitary is controlled by the mediobasal hypothalamus whereas most stress-induced and physiologic patterns of pituitary secretion are regulated by both hypothalamic and extrahypothalamic regions of the brain. Neurotransmitters are involved primarily in transferring information from extrahypothalamic sites to hypothalamic peptidergic neurons, which are the major controlling links between the brain and the endocrine system.
