Owing to the recent advances in gastroenterologic endoscopy, it has become possible to treat radically some types of early gastric cancer by endoscopic procedures. In 1973, we were the first in Japan to treat an elevated type of early gastric cancer by endoscopic polypectomy. Since then, 12 cases of such lesions have been treated by this method, without surgery, in our hospital. Of these patients, 11 have been alive for more than 5 years, and one died from renal cancer, independent of the gastric malignancy treated 6 years ago.1
