Abstract
While some Unix users are only interested in running ready-made programs, others wish to make at least occasional use of the program development facilities available under this system. They find themselves well served; because the Unix operating system is widely used, compiler writers have found it worthwhile to produce language compilers to run under it. This chapter provides an overview of the programming languages generally available, giving details on the most important and popular.
