Abstract

Estimation of the fractional excretion of filtered sodium (FEFS) is one of several indices that help in distinguishing prerenal azotemia from acute renal failure. It is obtained from measurements of urinary and serum creatinine and sodium. An FEFS value less than 1% (0.01) is consistent with prerenal azotemia; a value greater than 1% is consistent with acute renal failure [1].
