Abstract
The first part of our analysis of male illicit activities concerns the perpetration of the offense. Sutherland and Cressey (1960) distinguished two types of explanation for crime: the processes operating at the moment of the occurrence of crime (the situational or dynamic explanation), and the processes operating in the earlier history of the criminal (the historical or genetic explanation). These authors rapidly went on to develop the second type of explanation, differential association, whereas they devoted merely a paragraph to argue that the immediate determinants of criminal behavior lie in the person-situation complex, which is the basis for the actual rational choice perspective (Cornish & Clarke, 1986). There is virtually nothing else in their book concerning the level of analysis of the modes of perpetration of the crime.
