Abstract

HLA-DR4 was first defined in the Seventh International Histocompatibility Workshop (7WS) by reactivity with two clusters of alloantisera known as WIA4 and WIA4x7 (1). The WIA4 group of sera was cross-reactive with DR5, and the WIA4x7 group was cross-reactive with DR7. Operationally monospecific anti-sera were available in the 8WS, and thus the definition of DR4 was relatively clear (2). Splits of DR4 have been frequently postulated, particularly in association with the T celldefined HLA-D subtypes Dw4, DwlO, Dw13, Dw14, and Dw15 (3,4,5). However, there has been no convincing evidence, supported by segregation studies, demonstrating a definite serologic split of DR4.
