Abstract

Heterotopia (Greek: heteros = other and topos = place) or ectopia (Greek: ektopos = displaced) refer to the presence of normal tissue in an abnormal location. Most heterotopias are considered congenital developmental anomalies caused by entrapment of embryologic cells in neighboring tissues during morphogenetic movements. This congenitally displaced tissue may differentiate in the course of organogenesis or perhaps later in response to an abnormal environment or nonspecific stimulus. The latter hypothesis would explain why most heterotopias become symptomatic only in adult life.
