Abstract

In this chapter I look into the relationships among synesthesia, hallucinations, illusions, and imagery, and suggest that there is a spectrum of conditions that may share or display a common cognitive structure. I also examine the question of whether synesthesia is “real,” and in doing so am forced to consider the larger issue of what is real.
