Abstract

It is generally agreed upon that projected advances in computer capacity make it unlikely that direct simulations of the full process of transition to turbulence - especially in complex geometries - will be possible for the foreseeable future. Some form of modeling will continue to be needed. For routine and repetitive design purposes, where a high degree of accuracy or the details of flow structures are not needed, Reynolds stress models are likely to remain the preferred approach. Where more detailed and accurate predictions of complex flows are required, large-eddy simulations based on an appropriate subgrid scale model are likely to play an increasingly important role. Consequently, the transition modeling group decided to focus its attention on both Reynolds stress models and subgrid scale models for large-eddy simulations.
