Abstract
Extracellular adenine nucleotides, adenosine 5′-monophosphate (AMP), adenosine 5′-diphosphate (ADP) and adenosine 5′-triphosphate (ATP) are active on mast cells, platelets and smooth muscle. These P2 purinoceptor-mediated actions have very different structure-activity relationships, which has lead to a subdivision into P2Z mast cell receptors, P2T platelet receptors, and P2Y inhibitory and P2X excitatory receptors on smooth muscle (Burnstock et al., 1985; Gordon, 1986).
