Abstract

This chapter will alert the practitioner to the hazards of manufactured and natural substances that cause TBI. Exposure can be through the lungs, skin, water, and food. A few common neurotoxins are discussed in some detail to enhance familiarity with neurotoxic symptoms. For detailed information the reader is referred to Bondy and Prasad (1988) on toxicity of metals, Gosselin, Smith, and Hodge (1984), a comprehensive source of industrially based substances, with their trade names and toxicity, Hartman (1988) on neuropsychological effects, Guthrie (1986) and R. Levin (1987) lead poisoning, and Tilson and Sparber (1987) on metals in combination with organic compounds, e.g., tin, lead, mercury.
