Assessing and Managing Agricultural Nitrogen Losses to the Environment

  • Chapter
Advances in Soil Science

Part of the book series: Advances in Soil Science ((SOIL,volume 14))

Abstract

Major concern continues over the potentially harmful environmental impacts associated with excessive agricultural nitrogen (N) losses. The concern is about losses in both water and atmospheric quality (Gilliam et al., 1985; Keeney, 1982a; Nielsen and MacDonald, 1978). Water quality concern has focused mainly on groundwater nitrate levels considered health-threatening and accelerated eutrophication of surface waters, whereas atmospheric concern focuses on increased emission of nitrous oxide associated with N fertilizer application. Concern about increased nitrous oxide emission stems from its implication in stratospheric reactions which contribute to depletion of the ozone that protects the earth from ultraviolet radiation.
