Applications to Urban Planning: An Overview

  • Chapter

Abstract

Since the early 1980s expert systems have received much attention from the news media, from programmers, and from managers and decision makers.1 Planners’ interest in the potential of computers to aid planning practice has sparked their curiosity about expert systems. Although expert systems to aid planners are not yet operational, research is underway into applications such as site analysis and zoning ordinance implementation. This article introduces expert systems, surveys their applications for planning, and explores how useful they may become in urban and regional planning and related fields.
