Abstract

Plasma fibronectin was first discovered as a contaminant of fibrinogen and as a constituent, along with fibrinogen, of various forms of plasma cryoprecipitate. Thus, an involvement with fibrin(ogen) has been implicit from the outset (Section 5.2). Further analyses showed that pFN was a substrate for the blood clotting enzyme, factor XIIIa transglutaminase (Section 5.3), and that FN becomes incorporated into blood clots during hemostasis and thrombosis. The role of FN in cellular adhesion and spreading of cells (Chapter 8) and in the organization of the cytoskeleton (Chapter 9) suggested further that some form of FN could play a role in the adhesion, spreading, and aggregation of blood platelets during the initial steps of hemostasis. In the paper describing the initial purification of pFN, Mosesson and Umfleet (1970) mentioned that FN could be detected in platelet lysates and immunofluorescence analyses of platelets adhering to collagen in vitro showed accumulation of FN around adherent platelets (Hynes et al, 1978).
