Introduction and Historical Overview
The study of fibronectins has been characterized by the confluence of disparate areas of research that initially proceeded quite separately. We know now that fibronectins comprise a class of high-molecular-weight glycoproteins present both in extracellular matrices and in soluble form in body fluids but, as the field developed, the various forms and functions of fibronectins were originally studied independently.
