Abstract
In this paper a brief overview of the processes of speech perception will be given. The goal is to place in the record of this conference a summary of a rather general view of the process of speech perception that seems to be consistent with current linguistic theory. From this perspective, thumbnail sketches of three classes of theories will be presented that deal with the acoustic-to-linguistic transformation that is performed by the human listener. Finally, it will be proposed that these three theories suggest rather different neural mechanisms, at least at the higher levels of the nervous system.
