Immunoregulatory CD4+ T Cell Subpopulations: Enumeration, Activation, and Functional Analyses in Normals and Autoimmune Disease

  • Chapter
Topics in Pediatrics

Abstract

Our understanding of the regulation of the normal immune response by T cells has been advanced enormously by the recognition of two distinct subsets of mature T cells. Inducer T cells that express the CD4 cell surface glycoprotein recognize antigen when it is presented by accessory cells in the context of class II self-histocompatibility determinants—eg, HLA-DR, -DQ, -DP.1 Suppressor/cytotoxic T cells that bear the CD8 surface molecule recognize antigen along with MHC class I determinants—eg, HLA-A and -B.1 It is now clear that CD4+ T cells play a pivotal role in the induction and regulation of a variety of immunological events. These include antigen-specific or polyclonal B cell activation, proliferation and differentiation of B cells into immunoglobulin producing cells, delayed type hypersensitivity, induction of CD8+ suppressor or cytotoxic T cells, and killing of appropriate target cells.
