Employment of Experimental Animals in Studies of Trichomonas vaginalis Infection

  • Chapter
Trichomonads Parasitic in Humans

Abstract

Susceptibility of nonspecific laboratory hosts to experimental infections with pathogenic trichomonads was recognized by early investigators, who established disease-producing infections in mice by parenteral inoculation of bacteria-free parasites of pigeons, Trichomonas gallinae,1 and of cattle, Tritrichomonas foetus.2 Surprisingly, early attempts to infect small mammals with Trichomonas vaginalis were mostly unsuccessful.3 The first account of lasting experimental infections of the laboratory mouse obtained with the human urogenital trichomonad was published by Schnitzer et al.4 in 1950. These authors provided also the first descriptions of lesions in mice caused by T. vaginalis after intraperitoneal, intramuscular, and subcutaneous inoculation. Thereafter, numerous investigators used laboratory rodents in studies of host-parasite interactions, virulence assays, and drug tests. The laboratory mouse has been the animal most widely used, although rats, guinea pigs, and hamsters have also been employed. The inoculation routes most frequently used were intraperitoneal, subcutaneous, and intra-vaginal. The literature on the subject is voluminous, and exhaustive coverage is not attempted in this chapter. Early data on animal experiments with T. vaginalis were listed by Trussell.3 Later the subject was repeatedly reviewed,5-8 usually with emphasis on the use of laboratory animals in antitrichomonal drug assays.5,6,8 The most complete survey of the literature until 1977 was published by Honigberg.9
