Abstract

The five trichomonad species found in humans- Trichomonas vaginalis, Trichomonas tenax, Pentatrichomonas hominis, Trichomitus fe- calis, and Dientamoeba fragilis—have the general structural characteristics of the order Trichomonadida. The first four species possess also the attributes of the subfamily Trichomonadinae of the family Trichomonadidae,1 while Dientamoeba has those of the atypical subfamily Dientamoebinae of the family Monocerco- monadidae.2
