Epidemiology of Urogenital Trichomoniasis

Abstract

Trichomonas vaginalis is a major cause of sexually transmitted vaginitis throughout the world. Although the organism is not an invasive pathogen associated with serious sequelae, its frequency and ability to produce a communicable vaginitis has given this agent a deserved notoriety. Trichomonas vaginalis was first discovered by Donné1 in 1836. For many decades the organism was considered a commensal in the urogenital tract. In 1916, Hoehne2 demonstrated a relationship between T. vaginalis and symptomatic vaginal discharge. It was not until 24 years later that Trussell and Plass2 fulfilled Koch’s postulates by transmitting the disease to volunteers by the intravaginal inoculation of axenic cultures of the organism. These data were substantiated 2 years later by Hesseltine et al.4
