Abstract
At least three species of trichomonads may be important in human medicine: Trichomonas tenax (O.F. Müller), Pentatrichomonas hominis (Davaine), and Trichomonas vaginalis Donné1; each appears to be limited to a specific site. Trichomonas tenax inhabits the oral cavity and P. hominis inhabits the colon, which is the primary site of Trichomonadida in other animal hosts. Infestation with either T tenax or P. hominis has seldom been associated with morbidity. In contrast to the other human trichomonads, T. vaginalis infects the urogenital tract and has been implicated as a common cause of urogenital disease.2–7
