Application of Tissue Culture Techniques to the Development of Insect-Resistant Rice
Rice is the principal food crop of about one-half of the world’s population. Approximately 90% of it is produced and consumed in Asia, with China and India being the world’s leading producers. Rice is a relatively minor crop in the United States, accounting for less than 2% of the world’s rice. However, in the areas of the U.S.A. where it is cultivated, rice is frequently the major cash crop. The U.S. rice industry produces approximately $1 billion worth of rice annually, about two-thirds of which is typically exported.
