Abstract

Mitral valvular insufficiency or regurgitation usually occurs during the period of ventricular systole following mitral valve closure as left ventricular systolic pressure exceeds left atrial pressure, and continues until aortic valve closure (A2). Under certain conditions, such as papillary muscle dysfunction, mitral regurgitation may not begin until mid- or late-systole. Thus, mitral valve insufficiency is best understood as dysfunction of the mitral valve apparatus.
