Abstract

One of the demoralizing consequences of the birth and hospitalization of a medically fragile infant is, for some parents, the loss of a sense of personal control over events. In Chapter 1, we described how the child’s premature birth and intensive care upset many parents because it revealed how little control they had over their childbearing outcomes. The hospitalization itself was another arena in which some mothers expressed dismay at their inability to exercise control.
