Abstract

A program can use a remote procedure call to do a jump subroutine call to a procedure on another computer. A procedure is a routine or set of routines that take input arguments, perform processing, and return values to the caller. To invoke a remote procedure, the client program specifies the computer to invoke the procedure on, the procedure to invoke, the arguments to the procedure, and where the return value should be placed. To process remote procedure calls, the server program makes its service available to the network, waits for remote procedure calls to its service, dispatches requests to the appropriate procedures passing in the arguments to the procedure, and returns the results from the procedure to the client.
