Abstract
There appears to be increasing evidence that the observations of Supernova 1987A can not be explained unless substantial nonradial motion and mixing occurred during the explosion. The earlier than expected detection of X-rays (eg. [1–3]) and γ-rays [4] can most easily be explained if the radioactive 56Co had been mixed from the interior regions of the star into the envelope where the optical depth was much smaller. Moreover, the width of infrared spectral lines of Fe II [5] and Ni II, Ar II, and Co II [6–8] indicate that these elements were mixed from the slower moving inner regions of the supernova into the faster moving outer layers. The smoothness of the light curve is also indirect evidence of the need for mixing to occur [9–11]. For additional observations evidence of instabilities and mixing, see elsewhere in this volume.
