Abstract
This important portion of the C.N.S. involved in the over all regulation of motor function comprises a widely spread system of nuclei and fiber tracts, cerebral cortex and numerous sub-cortical regions. In contrast to the pyramidal system, this complex motor system influences lower motor neurons via numerous neurons and synapses, involving complex feedback mechanisms. Working in concert with the pyramidal motor system, the basal ganglia apparatus assists in the control of purposive movement. This system has a greater influence over proximal musculature than does the pyramidal system, and conversely, the pyramidal system has a greater influence upon the distal musculature.
