Abstract
The diencephalon, a large gray matter mass located at the rostral end of the brainstem, represents the highest subcortical level of neural interpretation. This important region has numerous complex functions which are involved in virtually all nervous system activity. This structure is partially divided into two halves by the midline presence of the third ventricle. The posterior limb of the internal capsule borders the diencephalon laterally, and the superior diencephalic surface forms part of the floor of the body of the lateral ventricle.
